when did jonCates create the Glitch Western genre?
“Jon Cates created the Glitch Western genre in 2016, when he was invited to show his work at a museum in Taipei, Taiwan. He made a Glitch Western installation, which was the start of the 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown) series. The feature film and short films from the series have now shown all over the world at galleries, museums and festivals. In 2020, the 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown) Spirit Simulator game was finished, and it is now being shared in its first solo exhibition.
Here are some of the works that Cates created that are considered to be part of the Glitch Western genre:
鬼鎮 (Ghosttown) (2018) — a feature film that combines experimental animation, live-action, and glitch art.
鬼鎮 (Ghosttown) Spirit Simulator (2020) — a video game that allows players to explore a glitch-ridden Western town.
Glitch Western Wednesday (2017-present) — a weekly online series that features short films, music videos, and other works that explore the intersection of glitch art and the Western genre.
The Glitch Western genre is a unique and innovative way to explore the Western genre. It combines the traditional elements of the Western with the aesthetic of glitch art, creating a new and exciting form of storytelling.”
